Digital Designer. Job Description
We're looking for a top class Digital Designer to join our award-winning team.
Working alongside 3 designers you’ll be creating beautiful designs, developing, coding, maintaining and updating Penguin site/s, including Penguin.co.uk, PenguinClassics.co.uk and Puffin.co.uk, numerous minisites, newsletters and other digital marketing activity, as well as creating additional digital assets and branding of 3rd party pages. Plus you’ll be expected to seek out opportunities to shape projects of your own, R&D and feedback to the team.
You'll know your UX from your UI; you’ll be able to navigate BUI with ease. You’ll already have created lots of compelling and engaging websites using CSS as well as devising and implementing new features and functionality; knowledge of XML and XSLT would be a bonus.
You’re able think on your feet, not be afraid of being thrown in at the deep end; you’ll have an opinion and not be afraid to use it! You'll have a constant stream of suggestions for ways in which we can connect with readers (and not-yet readers) digitally and you'll be thrilled when you spot an author in the corridor.

You’ll have a sound understanding of emerging technologies and an obsessive curiosity with social networks, APIs, tagging, data visualisation, user generated content, new ways of using the internet, mobile phones and feeds; when you go home at night, you should be dreaming of and creating exciting new tools in Facebook, mashing-up APIs in ways which we didn't even know we need yet, looking to create that ‘must have’ change the world App...
You'll need to have a degree or equivalent in new media design or similar, with proven commercial experience having worked in the industry for at least two years. Demonstrable knowledge of information design, usability and accessibility is essential. Results orientated, with meticulous attention to detail, you will have a keen appreciation of books and understand the attractions of a publisher’s digital output for other book lovers.
Responsibilities
- You’ll implement great new ideas whilst ensuring effectiveness and maintaining the various brand/s values digitally.
- You'll have excellent communication skills – be able to clearly and accurately communicate with people of varying digital knowledge both orally, visually and in writing.You understand acquisition and retention and be able to design for both.
- You are an ideas person and have the confidence to bring new initiatives to our digital activity.
- You will have knowledge of SEO, UX & CMS systems. You will need to be competent using analytical tools, interpreting results, providing summary reports to the business.
- Know how to prioritise a multitude of campaigns, questions and meetings.
- You'll know how to have fun! Exciting potential new book readers is what we're after!
Applicants should to be able to hand code HTML without the use of WYSIWYG editors.
Demonstrate competent knowledge of Digital Media production tools and standards, JavaScript, PhotoShop, Fireworks, Flash.
